For example, words like though, through, and thorough are all pronounced differently despite their similar spelling. This is one of the most frequent questions I get asked about!

These challenges are particularly difficult, especailly for Spanish speakers, whose everyday language is far more phonetic. But, understanding that many of these quirks come from the evolution of English can help with frustrations and improve your ability to memorise any exceptions. 

2. Silent Letters: More Than Just a Typo

Silent letters are one of the most famous, and annoying features, of English spelling. These letters, although written, are not pronounced. This can make spelling feel like a guessing game. Some of the most common silent letter combinations include:

• K in knight or know
• B in doubt or thumb
• E at the end of words like bake or hope

Silent letters can be really tricky for non-native speakers and I get asked about them all the time from students. But the reality is, the best way to master silent letters is through consistent practice and exposure to authentic materials, such as books, podcasts, and videos.

3. Vowel Variations: One Letter, Multiple Sounds

Vowels in English are famous for changing sounds depending on the word. Consider the letter 'a', which is pronounced differently in:

• Cat (short "a")
• Cake (long "a")
• Car (broad "a")

This variation can be overwhelming, but it's part of what makes English unique ... yes, I know you have a million other adjectives you'd rather use here. A helpful strategy is to learn the most common vowel patterns and their respective sounds. Understanding these patterns, especially when paired with context clues, can help you predict the pronunciation of new words.

4. Stress and Intonation: Shifting Meaning

In English, stress and intonation can completely alter the meaning of a word or sentence. Words that are spelled the same but pronounced differently depending on stress are called heteronyms. For instance:

• Record (noun) vs. record (verb)
• Contract (noun) vs. contract (verb)

Intonation also plays a key role in distinguishing questions from statements. For example:
“You’re coming?” (rising intonation) vs. “You’re coming.” (falling intonation) changes the meaning of the sentence.

Or as many of my students have heard me say, "I'm sorry but it's just an exception!" However, the more you’re exposed to the language, the more familiar you'll become with them and the more these exceptions will start to make sense ... I promise!

• Practice through repetition: Repetition helps solidify the connection between spelling and pronunciation. Listening to native speakers and imitating them can help improve your spoken English.
